Analysing Costume, Props, Settings and Location In a Music Video

Ariana Grande is known for her cute and playful style. Her actual voice goes very well with her image as she comes across as an innocent and sweet teenager. Her target audience is around 14-18 year olds. In the song 'Baby I' which is currently her latest single, she has 6 outfit changes, she wears bright colours to promote this image of her. They also link well to the lyrics and music as it is an upbeat song about love. The use of costume is typical for this genre, as she has a more sweeter look to her, the record label have kept this image to ensure the target audience are consistent. The locations are the same amount as the costume changes; 6. The settings go well with the costumes as they are daytime outfits around the city that she is in. I can connote that this is somewhere in America, possibly California. The use of these settings are quite typical. In many pop videos there are shots with the artist walking down the road with back up dancers to emphasise the lyrics.

You & Me by Disclosure falls under the genre of House music. Here, they have used about 5 different changes of outfits, within the whole music video, many of these outfits are repeated. It is a narrative story line, therefore telling the story of a couple on holiday. The costumes fit in well with the song and music itself. The chorus parts usually play scenes of them in a club.
The costumes used are everyday clothing, to make the song more relatable to an everyday couple, or someone that may have the same experiences of going on holiday. It also makes the target audience more identifiable as the couple wear slightly grunge clothing, oversized jumpers and baggy tops, very casual for a couple of around 21 years of age.

In this video there is about 7 different locations, all which are filmed on holiday. The location is in France and the costumes link well because the characters blend in and look like normal every day people. The specific location may be less linked to the genre of House music. But the clubs scenes are very typical to be shown as the music is very upbeat. This gives way for club scenes with strobe lights to be used.
Anonymous by Bobby Valentino is under the genre of R'n'B. In this video there is only 4 outfit changes, and about 3 locations too. This video also contains a female that participates as the artists love interest. The outfits in this are simple, considering that most of the shots in this video are close ups of the artist. We can two shirts and two sweatshirts being used, accompanied by a lot of jewellery, this is very typical of an R'n'B music video as it is usually about the artist, love or money, therefore it follows the conventions. The love interest has been made to act sexy for the enjoyment of the male audience. The costumes relate to the genre and the song as it is based in a party. Therefore the jewellery and shirts aren't out of the question.

The location is basically set in one house, or made to look like its all in one place, but different rooms. For example, when the woman first meets him, the setting is in a kitchen. Then again she appears with him in a shower. For this scene she wears a metallic gold bikini, emphasising the target audience which would be possibly males around 18-24 that aspire to be like the artist.
